Jacket

The steel lattice structure used to support an offshore steel platform.

Jacket platform

A platform constructed entirely of steel; such platforms are generally kept in position by means of steel poles driven into the sea-bed.

Jack-up drilling rig

An offshore drilling structure with tubular or derrick legs that support the deck and hull. When positioned over the drilling site, the bottoms of the legs rest on the sea-floor. A jack-up rig is towed or propelled to a location with its legs up. Once the legs are firmly positioned on the bottom, the deck and hull height are adjusted and levelled.

Jet bit

A modified drill bit utilising a hydraulic jet to increase the drilling rate.

Jet gun

An assembly, including a carrier and shaped charges, that is used in jet perforating.

Jet perforate

To create a hole through the casing with a shaped charge of high explosives instead of a gun that fires projectiles. The loaded charges are lowered into the hole to the desired depth. Once detonated, the charges emit short, penetrating jets of high-velocity gases that cut holes in the casing and cement and some distance into the formation. Formation fluids then flow into the well bore through these perforations. See bullet perforator and gun perforator.

Jets

The nozzles (usually three in number) in the drill bit through which the drilling mud emerges from the drill string during drilling operations.

Joint

A single length (about 30 feet) of drill pipe or of drill collar, casing, or tubing, that has threaded connections at both ends. Several joints screwed together constitute a stand of pipe. See stand, single, double, thribble and fourble.

Joint venture

An investment undertaken by a consortium, usually with one member acting as operator.

A jPeg image is similar to a Bitmap.

Jug hustler

A member of a seismic crew who operates the geophones.

Junked

When equipment is lost down a well and cannot be retrieved economically, the well is junked, i.e. plugged and abandoned.

Junked well

See junked.

Jurassic period

The period of geological time which began roughly 180 million years ago and ended roughly 130 million year ago.
